WHAT DOES WATER DAMAGE COST? FROM AMERIDRI

Pipe Burst From Freeze DamageWater pipe burst, hot water heater pipe burst, washing machine water hose burst, toilet water supply line burst, pouring rain, heavy snow, and torrential flooding can cause severe water damage to your home. Other extreme conditions such as blizzards, tornadoes, and hurricanes can easily destroy a structure.

However, it does not necessarily take one sudden flooding to cause severe damage, but water in smaller amounts can cause severe damage over time, such as a slow leak on your refrigerator water supply line. Don’t underestimate the power of water in this case, and the cost of water damage you may incur. I go into detail of how much water damage costs and how water damage is invoiced in the above video on this blog. The video is over an hour long due to the amount of information needed to explain the costs. If you have questions, PLEASE call our office at 719-388-8509.

WILL MY INSURANCE COMPANY PAY THE BILL?

At times, the water damage could be so severe that the house is declared inhabitable. In this case, the owners will have to look for another place to live in until the damage is fixed. One major hidden cost that comes with water damage is living expenses. If you have water damage from an interior water pipe burst, then your insurance almost always covers the cost of drying and rebuilding any damage associated with the claim. Keep in mind that you may be using your own money the first week or so for staying in a hotel and eating out, while waiting on reimbursement from your insurance carrier.

Some major insurance companies have deals already set up with extended stay properties, and will put you and your family into one of these properties without initial expense to you. Keep in mind that you will most likely be paying out of pocket for eating out if you do not have a kitchen where you are staying. You will need to keep receipts so you can be reimbursed from your insurance company. Something important to remember is if the flooding came in the form of rain and got into your home by flowing over the dirt into your basement, then unless you have flood insurance, you will be responsible for all the costs associated with any work performed in your home.

WHAT IF I FIND MOLD?

One major cost that might be experienced is medical care costs. Water damage results into growth of mold if it is not properly dealt with in the initial stages (within the first five days). This is especially true for humid, warm climates. My wife, Kathy got mold poisoning 15 years ago in New Mexico.

We were one of the first people in the State to win a mold contamination lawsuit. To this day my wife still cannot be around high quantities of mold along with most chemical smells, such as perfumes or most chemical smells that are man-made. In most cases, mold is much easier to alleviate if found early on. Mold can also cause rashes, respiratory problems, allergies, etc. to your family if the water damage is not alleviated and cleaned properly. Whenever medical attention is needed, the various medical visits and medication will cost you unexpected charges.

WHAT IF THE PERSONAL CONTENTS IN MY HOME ARE ALSO DAMAGED?

Keep in mind that not all the items will be useful again after the water damage disaster. The various items that have been upholstered such as furniture and carpets might still be difficult to restore if wet for an extended period of time. In some cases, it can even cost more to have the items cleaned than simply purchasing replacements. Generally, items made of cotton or paper will have to be thrown away and replaced. If your personal belongings have sat in water for an extended period of time, they may need to be replaced. Working with a professional mitigation company who knows how to negotiate with your insurance company will be a really big blessing to you.

THE FOLLOWING FACTORS ARE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT WHEN CONSIDERING THE COST OF WATER DAMAGE REPAIR AND RESTORATION:

The amount of water that caused the damage; more water, equals more damage. If you hire a professional company, they will charge you based on how much water they remove, how many rooms are damaged, do walls or floors need to be removed. The number of furniture and furnishings that are salvageable: if the damage was severe, majority of these items can’t be saved. Was the company dispatched after hours, or on weekends or holidays?

The cost of water damage to the homeowner is quite obvious. Many personal belongings and furniture may be destroyed, and they will have to be replaced. This can cost you a lot of money if you are under insured (See my blog post on homeowner’s insurance riders). It is recommended that you avoid making small claims on your house insurance, since it may increase your annual payments.
